Team Size: 11

Role: Lead Designer

Tools: Unreal 5

Genre: First-Person Cozy Bee Simulator

Development Time: 1 Month

Responsibilities:

System Design:

  • Created a day-night cycle that affects the behaviors of the AI and allows the player to sleep to reset the cycle to daytime.

  • Worked on companion AI that can collect resources and deposit them at a set location. If it is night time the AI will also return home to bed until it is morning.

  • Made a UI Locator that acts as a part of the HUD meant to indicate the players' hive is located through an indicator that moves along the edge of the screen.

Content Design:

  • Made a tutorial level that looked nice and taught the players everything they needed to know to play the game.

  • Made a level easter egg where the player can push a ball on the ground into a net and confetti will pop out and cheers will play.

  • Implemented a lot of the assets into the game and replaced any placeholders.

Programmer:

  • I made a pause menu so that the player can adjust the settings.

  • I made a color blindness setting for players to play with custom visuals.

  • Programmed a stamina system that when depleted will use the players' health to continue flying and will regenerate when the player lands. This was cut from the final product as it didn't feel like it fit the theme of the game.

Description:

BeeLC was made for my Asset Management class during my time in the master's program at Full Sail University. In BeeLC the player will play as a bee that has to fly from plant to plant collecting and depositing pollen. As they play the player will have to avoid obstacles and help direct their bee companions to flowers that are ready for harvesting.

Research:

For BeeLC I spent a lot of time working on UI indicators that help prevent the player from losing where their hive is. The best way to achieve this was by working with the contents of the player's HUD to create a non-objective UI element that indicates where the hive is in relation to where the player is looking. It was important to me to use studies that could outline the effect HUDs have on a player's experience.
